About Robin and Jayne
Although Jayne and I both grew up in Milwaukee
suburbs, our parents had a strong love of the land and an even greater love for
fresh food. I remember tending my crops (beets were my favorite) and then
helping my mother put them up for the winter. Even though it was a city
lot, my mother canned, froze and pickled enough food from that garden to keep
our family of six happily fed throughout the winter.
As important as learning how to plant and weed and
eat fresh foods, my mother taught me the basic principles of organic
gardening. No one knew she was such a trend setter. As
we grew older, science and medicine joined the grassroots organic movement.
Jayne and I continued to follow my mother’s
guidance, in all of our projects. We tended our first garden in the
yard of our Milwaukee home. Although the backyard vegetable garden was
tiny, we produced enough tomatoes for salads and sandwiches well into the
fall. And yellow coneflowers dazzled both us and our
neighbors in our first prairie garden.
Working
the earth and tending the garden is a great joy. An even better joy is
savoring the delicacies of the gardens. I remember family reunions with
my grandparents where everything on the table was produced on the farm.
Hamburger from the cattle, milk from the cows, potato salad with new red
potatoes, radishes and leaf lettuce salads, and more. My mouth waters
just thinking about it.
After
these wonderful feasts, my German great aunt and grandmother would wish us well
and send us on our way with the expression “safe home”.
Here
at Safe Home Farm we continue our farming heritage with an emphasis on
sustainable living. We strive to do our work in a manor that is
safe for the environment, safe to our bodies, safe to our friends and to the
animals. |
