About Safe Home Farm
We are a very small operation. I am on the
farm full-time (which in the summer is double time). Jayne has an
off-farm career so she also gets double duty in the summer. She will
schedule some vacation during our busier times to help with planting,
harvesting or the persistent weeding that needs to be done.
Even though we have always grown organically, we
currently choose not to be certified. We have a small customer base and
we educate them on the practices we use to grow our tasty, chemical-free
vegetables and herbs.
When we started growing vegetables, we discovered
it was virtually impossible to find organically grown bedding plants.
Also, we were looking for interesting varieties in tomatoes, eggplant, peppers
and herbs so we started growing our own seedlings.
There is a sunroom on the south wall of our kitchen
that served well as a greenhouse, as we were getting started. When we
couldn’t get into the kitchen, because the tomatoes were blocking the
door, we put up a 16 by 30 foot greenhouse and we love it.
In the spring, we sell bedding plants at our local
Farmer’s Market in Platteville. We have developed some regular
customers who like our plant variety.
In mid-June, we end our market trips to focus on
the CSA and on our Savannah Restoration.
